About Ankara in Turkey

Lying on the eastern edge of the great Anatolian Plateau in the heart of Anatolia, Ankara is the capital and second largest city of Turkey, after Istanbul. The city was formerly known as Angora, which is famous for its high quality wool and home to Angora goats. Ankara is a main political, commercial, industrial, and cultural center of Turkey. Ankara has a moderate climate, with cold winters and dry, hot summers. The city of Ankara has a population of around 4 million.

Ankara is an old city with many historical architecture and monuments. Also known as the Monumentum Ancyranum, the Temple of Augustus contains the only known inscriptions directly related to the first Roman emperor, the famous Res Gestae Divi Augusti in 20 BC. The Mausoleum of Kemal Ataturk is where the founder of Republic of Turkey was buried. Its architecture is a blend of ancient and modern styles. The Museum next to Mausoleum houses a wax statue of Ataturk, his writings and personal items. The Ankara Ethnography Museum has a fine collection of folkloric artifacts during Seljuk-era and Ottoman-era. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations houses a huge range of works and showpiece, as well as treasures. The Kocatepe Mosque which was built in the late 20th century is an architecture of classical Ottoman Style. Ataturk Forest Farm and Zoo is a vast recreational farming area with a zoo. Other touirst attractions include the War of Independence Museum, the State Art and Sculpture Museum, Victory Monument, Hatti Monument and Haci Bayram Mosque.
