About Izmir in Turkey

Located on the Gulf of Izmir in western part of the country, Izmir is Turkey's third largest city, after Istanbul and Ankara. Its port is one of Turkey's largest ports. It is also an important commercial, industrial, trade and tourism center of the country. The city has a population of 2.5 million. The climate of Izmir climate is mild most of time. The city is also known as "the Pearl of the Aegean" in the world.

Izmir is an old city with many historical sites and attractions. The Kizlaragasi Han is a fine example of 18th-century Ottoman architecture of the period. The tomb of Tantalus is a good example of the tholos style monumental tombs. Standing in the middle of Cumhuriyet Meydan, the statue of Ataturk was erected in 1933 to commemorate the day Kemal came to Izmir with the turk forces. The famous Clock Tower on Konak Square was built in 1901. Other tourist attractions include the Agora of Smyrna, the old Greek Quarter, Agora Open Air Museum of Izmir and the Stone Fountain.
